Church Law

Harper Gerlach advises numerous churches, associations and state-wide denom-inations on a variety of legal matters.  While religious organizations (whether they are Christian, Jewish, Muslim or any other recognized religion) may enjoy immunities from some federal and state laws and regulations, there are many employment-related laws that do apply to religious organizations.  In fact, recent trends involving the Fair Labor Standards Act show a whittling away of protections for religious institutions. Allegations of negligent hiring/retention, defamation, sexual abuse/harassment, internal violation of church by-laws or other governing documents, and improper administration are just some of the issues that can arise for churches, synagogues and mosques.

Gary Yeldell leads up the Church Law team at Harper Gerlach.  Gary has con-siderable experience in this area, including not only advising, counseling and consulting religious organizations, but litigating various claims involving church administration issues and the disposition and protection of church assets.

The lawyers at Harper Gerlach can advise and assist clergy, lay leaders and mem-bers of religious organization with whatever legal dilemmas may arise.
